How a pillow was born
It was July 2006. My daughter Keira was only a month old. From the day she was born, she suffered
from severe eczema. The doctors told me that because she was so miserable and itchy, I had to comfort
her through feeding every time she woke up at night. One night as I was feeding Keira, I noticed that we
were both sweating and the skin-to-skin contact was only making her discomfort worse. That is when the
idea for the KeirKai came to me. I needed a small slip-on pillow that I could easily move from arm to arm
to act as a comfort barrier between us.
The following morning I summoned my mom's sewing skills to the task. We experimented with sizes, fabrics and designs until
we came up with the best prototype. We then passed the sewing torch to my friend Wendy who used her own creativity and
craftsmanship to take the KeirKai from homemade to home run! After enlisting several moms to use the KeirKai, we came up
with the idea for the blanket attachment for draping or cuddling.
I used the KeirKai every time I fed Keira and I loved it! I used it at home, on airplanes and
in restaurants. It provided great comfort, privacy and style! My husband and parents were
also able to use it for bottle-feeding. I loved being able to throw it in the washer and dryer
and transport it easily in my diaper bag.
I have seen people toting big cushions through the airport and hiding in corners
in restaurants. I really believe the practicality and usefulness of the KeirKai is
going to make a logistically difficult time a little easier for a lot of parents!
